JOHANNESBURG – Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said several arrests have been made in the fight against cash-in-transit crimes since the stabilisation intervention programme launched in May.

There have been 93 cash-in-transit robberies since the start of January.

Police believe a new syndicate could be behind the recent spate of robberies.

“Since May last year, we have made several arrests,” Naidoo said.

“We can’t rule out the possibility that there may be a new group and we also have to look at the possibility that those we have arrested maybe out on bail and still continuing with this crime.

“These are some of the things we are engaging with the Department of Justice, the National Prosecuting Authority, DPCI (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) and of course private security.”
